17 May is International Day against Homophobia & Transphobia #IDAHOBIT2021 In Cuba, a months long programme of activities to mark the day is taking place under the banner All the Rights for All the People, which was launched at a televised press conference last week.
Online and televised events replace the usual two weeks of social and cultural activities this year due to COVID-19. On 16 May Cuban television broadcast an artistic gala to mark Cuba’s 14th year of celebrating the date.
On 17 May, the Ministry of Health flew the LGBT+ pride flag for the first time, and a national day of tweets is also taking place under the hashtags #FamiliasDiversas, #FamiliasCubanas, #Cenesex, and #UnCodeInclusivo which references the updating of the Family Code which will be put to a public discussion and vote later in the year, and includes provisions to allow same sex marriage in the new legislation.
